I particularly like the cake analogy. Nice, simple way to explain it.

:applause:The plural of "anecdote" is not "data".
Reminds me of this...Paladin said:I particularly like the cake analogy. Nice, simple way to explain it.
Good illustration. Leave it up to Penn and Teller to put it in a way that everyone can understand.CoffeeMate said:Reminds me of this...Paladin said:I particularly like the cake analogy. Nice, simple way to explain it.
It certainly captures the character of the so-called "reasonable compromise" fallacy.
Like Lawdog says, statistics lie because they're always manipulated. 30,000 gun deaths per year is a meaningless number.gunsmoker said:But Lawdog said that 30,000 gun deaths per year is miniscule compared to fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.
How many of the fatal vehicle wrecks did the cars cause?gunsmoker said:Good read.
But Lawdog said that 30,000 gun deaths per year is miniscule compared to fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.
Maybe back in the 1970s that was true, but fatal car wrecks are actually less common than they used to be. These days 30,000 is about right. So that's equal to gun deaths, if you accept the figure used in the gun-control advocate's question.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that there were 30,700 fatal vehicle wrecks in 2009, the most recent year the data has been compiled.

And how many of them happened in locations off-limits to civilian cars?seereus said:How many of the fatal vehicle wrecks did the cars cause?gunsmoker said:Good read.
