Authorities have identified the man they say took several hostages at a North Carolina bank before police shot him to death as he tried to leave with a woman while pointing a gun to her head.
And look, he's not a thug. He was going back to school to get his HS degree... :rotfl2:
According to Wake County Schools Spokesman Michael Evans, Mitchell re-enrolled as a freshman at Panther Creek High School last month. He attended the school between Aug. 2007 and Sept. 2008 before dropping out.

Armed robbery is a key component of that process.
Must have been trying to get some lunch money for school.

+1

They should show that video at the annual bad guy convention.
Sadly, He needed it!

The cost of one bullet is much better investment, then spending $55,000 to $130,000 to keep bad guys in jail every year.

Which one took the shot? I was expecting one of the LEOs to look like he was set to take the shot. The few that had the angle looked like they were moving too much.

Could have been a sniper on scene.
It looks like the hostage was lucky to get away. They really unloaded on the guy right after he went down. There were shots zinging off the concrete and into the dirt with the hostage a foot or two away.

Turns out the "gunman" was unarmed. I read elsewhere that when he jumped the counter at the bank he was yelling for them to call the police. Suicide by cop isn't something most people "trying to turn their life around" would want on their resume.

Looks like he got what he really wanted.

At about the 23-24 second mark you can see the muzzle blast from the officer that took the shot.
I wonder if the decedent believed that he'd be allowed to walk out to safety, like in the movies, if he could make people believe that he was intent on harming his hostage. You and I may know that it doesn't work that way but television and Hollywood inform to a great extent the expectations of the up and coming criminal class, both in terms of the mechanism of law as it relates to crime & punishment, the rights of the citizenry to self-defense, and what constitutes a lethal force situation.

Another failure of a GFZ, at a Wachovia to boot. NC would do well to lift some of the many cumbersome firearm laws it has on its books, such as its prohibition against armed CHPs into banks. NY has less off limits places than NC does. So does MA. :?

Which video has footage of an officer firing during the seize?

I was referring to the one posted above at about the 23-24 second mark that shows the officer was not that far away. From below:
