Gunsmoker, which candidate will you pick to research?

I want to help. I actually live in the 6th district, so I am pretty sure the candidates want to interact with me.

[EDIT]
I semi-randomly chose to research Kurt Wilson. He was the last Republican listed. I will research and post back in this thread.

I wrote Kurt the following letter via email:. Found the address on his Facebook page. I know these questions don't cover everything, but I think they will give us enough information to make an informed decision. I intentionally left out any organization names since I am not an official representative of anything.

Note that Kurt is a businessman who is running for his first elected office so there is no voting record to inspect.
_______________

Kurt,

I am a member of a few local 2A rights groups and would like to discover more about your position on gun owner's rights so I can report that information back to our membership. With eighteen candidates vying for the District 6 seat, we had to split up in order to cover everyone. I selected you to research. I am also a voting resident of the 6th district and have a personal interest in who represents me in the US House. I am not a professional or even an amateur journalist. I am not trying to find a "gotcha" excerpt or edit in any of your answers. I promise I will convey your entire answers to my groups, however I reserve the right to add commentary which will be clearly delineated from your answers.

I would like to start by inviting you to tell me your general stance on the Second Amendment and what you think it means today.

I have some specific questions regarding current gun rights issues. I would like your answer to include not only your position, but your reasoning behind those positions. Feel free to write as much as you want in your answers.

What are your thoughts on the "Heller" decision and how Congress can impact that decision.

Georgia is a "shall issue" state. Should all states be "shall issue", "may issue", or continue with the mix we have now? Why?

What is your position on gun-free zones? What specific areas should or should not be off limits to licensed carry permit holders? I am particularly interested in your answers and thoughts regarding government buildings, public parks, college campuses, and public transportation.

What is your position on national carry permit reciprocity?

What is your position on "Constitutional Carry"? By this I mean all persons not prohibited to own a firearm may carry that firearm without a license from the state.

What is your position on the "Hearing Protection Act" and other NFA reform measures?

What do you see as the proper role of the BATFE and other Federal agencies regarding the Second Amendment?

Is there anything else you wish to tell me and our members regarding your position on the Second Amendment and gun rights in general?

I realize these are fairly detailed questions that may require extensive time to answer, but I think they are important issues that will fully convey your thoughts and positions on the Second Amendment.

Thank you for your time and attention,

Sincerely,
Geoff N. Hiten

I read that last reply as "Yes I want to support 2A rights but I have no idea how". He doesn't know the NFA from the GCA. He couldn't tell you why silencers have a $200 tax stamp and a de-facto nine month waiting period. He couldn't list the prohibitions that make a person prohibited from firearms ownership. He literally doesn't know. But he professes a philosophy that is not hostile and a willingness to listen. Sounds like an opportunity to educate someone at the beginning of their political career. So while I agree that he what we would consider a "real supporter", he could grow into one given the right coaching.

Kurt has not replied to my inquiry. Not even to acknowledge it. take from that what you will.

Just received the following reply from Alice Turner, Kurt Wilson's communications director. As promised, I am posting it verbatim.

Dear Mr. Hiten,

Thank you for reaching our to Kurt Wilson regarding his position on the 2nd Amendment and gun rights. Please find below, answers to your questions in italics. We appreciate your interest in Kurt, and would welcome your support for his candidacy for Congress in the 6th District of Georgia.

Please let me know if I can answer any other questions you may have.

Many thanks again for reaching out.

What are your thoughts on the "Heller" decision and how Congress can impact that decision.

I support the Heller decision and any initiatives that support strict interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.

Georgia is a "shall issue" state. Should all states be "shall issue", "may issue", or continue with the mix we have now? Why?

I believe these decisions should be made by the states, and according to the 2nd amendment.

What is your position on gun-free zones? What specific areas should or should not be off limits to licensed carry permit holders? I am particularly interested in your answers and thoughts regarding government buildings, public parks, college campuses, and public transportation.

I believe citizens should have the right to carry guns, as indicated in the constitution.

What is your position on national carry permit reciprocity?

This type of program gives the federal government too much access to gun holders. I support all citizens enjoying the freedoms granted by the 2nd Amendment.

What is your position on "Constitutional Carry"? By this I mean all persons not prohibited to own a firearm may carry that firearm without a license from the state.

Again, I believe citizens should enjoy the right to bear arms as spelled out in the 2nd Amendment. I believe the 2nd Amendment gives citizens that right to carry outright.

What is your position on the "Hearing Protection Act" and other NFA reform measures?

I am in favor of less taxes. So tax rebates on silencers is favorable to me.

What do you see as the proper role of the BATFE and other Federal agencies regarding the Second Amendment?

Federal agencies mean a larger bureaucracy, where decisions are made by individuals who aren't elected by citizens and yield too much power. So, it would be best for federal agencies to yield less influence as it relates to citizen gun rights.

Is there anything else you wish to tell me and our members regarding your position on the Second Amendment and gun rights in general?

I am a constitutionalist, and believe in the strict interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.

Ossoff has been spending a LOT of money on TV ads. None of which identify which party he is affiliated with. Once it is known he is a Democrat, I think his popularity may diminish.

Thanks. Why aren't the other candidates hammering him on wanting to represent a district he doesn't think well enough of to actually live in?
Tactics. John Ossof will likely "win" the general election, but not by enough to avoid a runoff. Right now, all the Republicans are jockeying to be the other candidate in the runoff. They are competing with each other, not the Democrat candidate.
