LEO encounter Cherokee County

I had several encounters this evening. My whole street was lined up with unmarked cars as well as marked Law Enforcement cars. I thought someone was having a party or something. I was on my way home from work, and as I got near my driveway, a LEO approached me and told me I couldn't go home.

"What?!! I have 2 little boys at home right now and my wife ... what's going on?!!" I asked. He said, "I can't tell you anything other than we have a 'situation' and you cannot come any further."

A lot of panicky thoughts raced through my head. Gunsmoker is probably more aware of what those thoughts were and I then asked the officer, "Is the situation at (my address)? That is where I live and I need to know if my family is safe."

"No, your family is fine".

So, with that, I had to turn around and head back up my own street. I parked in a cul de sac, when I saw a neighbor standing in his driveway. I approached him and asked if he knew what was going on. We introduced ourselves, and he said I could go ahead and park my van in his driveway. All he could say was that he heard a person was "holed up" in a room and fired some shots. I then noticed a SWAT truck slowly making its way down the street. His wife said I should probably go and tell them my wife is deaf and I have 2 young boys at home and should be escorted there. So I went up to the back of the vehicle and a floodlight was shined in my face. I calmly told them I wasn't trying to interfere, that I lived up the street and wanted them to know my wife is deaf and I have 2 young boys at home that would absolutely freak out if they saw them. I had been trying to get in touch with my wife and she had not answered the phone (we use facetime). These guys were heavily armed. They looked like they were about to go up against an army. I was told they would convey that message and he asked my address which I gave. I then walked back to where my van was and the older gentleman I had been talking to said someone should at least escort me home if I couldn't drive home. That was when I saw another officer pull up and he was gearing up and pulling stuff out of the trunk of his car. He told me he would escort me to my house.

I got home to find out my wife had never received any of my messages. It was about 9:45 p.m. when I got home. She told me they (the police) had been there since 5 p.m. She said that an officer walked up to the door and told her to stay inside and to keep our kids inside until they left. My oldest was asking me why all the police were there. My youngest was sound asleep.

Ok, from what the neighbor told me, and what a friend told me on FB, the person they were attempting to "help" is not someone I know. However, the mother of that house and her son are someone my wife and I know. Her son has spoken to us several times and waved as he either drove or walked past our house.

They (the police) left several hours ago, and I am trying to find news or something that indicated what happened. None of the officers I interacted with could say anything other than it was a "situation".

They had a mobile command hq set up in my next door neighbor's driveway. Heavily armed SWAT and my entire street was lined up with patrol cars from different agencies.

Anyone "here" know what happened? Was it a hostage situation? Why the overwhelming military/leo presence?

It happened in Cherokee County.

I saw Gwinnett PD had a road blocked off on the next street over from me a couple of weeks ago. Patrol cars everywhere. Firetruck and ambulance at the end of the street waiting to go down the street if/when needed. I have no idea what it was about and didn't see anything in the news about it.

I asked why and she said she didn’t realize it was still going on. I also usually get home much later than I did.

She didn’t receive any of my messages and it makes me wonder if the area was geofenced?

My understanding from my contacts in the CSO is that their mobile command center can do the electronic fencing and they routinely do so when standoffs are occurring. Sorry for your inconvenience and worry the other night. When you say other jurisdictions were they local (e.g., Holly Springs, Canton, etc.) or was this escalated to state/federal?

They all looked to be local jurisdictions. Several unmarked vehicles with government plates. All were professional and “friendly”. I didn’t feel in fear of my life or anything like that, I just panicked at first thinking something had happened to my family.

Understandable. My experiences, as I've related in the past, have all been positive with the CSO and GSP. Those with PD officers have almost all been mildly or more negative. Glad they were all professional. Glad you and your family are well.

Sorry that happened to you. We had something similar happen by the entrance to our neighborhood last weekend. It's annoying when the police act like they're running black ops behind the Iron Curtain instead of just telling residents what's going on. Crime stats are public info and we'll find out eventually.

I just spoke with our postal courier and she said he was a very friendly man and always came out and talked with her. She also said he was the husband and father. I spoke with some neighbors and told them we should send a care package or something to the family.

I am just surprised, completely, with the militarized show of force - but in a way, I can sort of understand it. The police are getting blamed for everything these days, and if this guy had been an extremist and planted bombs, etc. then this show of force would have been necessary. The police didn't know who this guy was, I am a neighbor and didn't even know him, and they didn't know what his plans were.

Years ago when I lived in douglasville I was laying on my couch watching TV when I noticed several cars turn off their headlights and turn into my driveway about 1am in the morning. I stepped outside and noticed my front yard was full of police. They looked at me and said go back inside.

Apparently my next door neighbor at the time was a sex offender that went Mia.

My point is you never really know who you live by.

I read a lot but not posted yet.

This is..... You're responsible for your own safety, not the government. Getting told you can't go into your own home? That's so crazy i'm not even sure what Amendment of the Constitution that would be under.

That was the ONLY problem I had with the entire situation. I was even discussing this with my mother tonight and she agreed with the officer ??? Of course, I am her "baby boy" and he was just making sure "I" was safe. She was not thinking about the fact that I have 2 babies and a wife, and they were in possible danger and I wasn't with them. Why turn me away but not tell my wife to take the kids somewhere for a couple of hours?

One of the Swat team members immediately recognized the problem and walked me to my front door.

My mother tried to spin this around that the Officer was just trying to clear people out of the "danger zone" and was probably just following orders and didn't want me getting shot if a shoot out occurred, or was possibly fearful I would get shot by another officer thinking I was a "bad guy". She didn't quite understand that I was also concerned about the same things, but that MY CHILDREN were in the "danger zone" that I was told I could not enter.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office SWAT team and negotiators arrived at the location "in an attempt to make contact with Dunn to no avail," the agency added.
I don't claim any knowledge or understanding of how or what police "negotiators" are trained for but perhaps something other than a police "negotiator" is called for in certain conditions.

"The principal goal of the military is to seek out and destroy the enemy. The primary
method of destroying the enemy by the military is to kill as many enemy
combatants as needed to force a complete capitulation."

http://www.cjcj.org/uploads/cjcj/documents/jpj_militarization_of_law_enforcement_-_fall_2015.pdf

"There have been numerous violations of this act since 1878 but to date no individuals have ever been held accountable. It is our position that law enforcement appears to have become a means whereby officials - local, state, and federal - have discovered a way to significantly reduce the use of the military in civilian situations through the militarization of the police; thus attempting to render the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 obsolete."
