  FAYETTE COUNTY

Location:

1 Center Drive
Fayetteville, GA 30214
Tel: 770-716-4220
Court Website: Click Here

Court Information: 8:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays

Probate court is at the new courthouse, not Sherrifs office, and the process begins here. After you finish at the probate court, you will visit the sheriffs office for finger printing. Driving directions to the probate court are:

Travel south of the square in Fayetteville on South Jeff Davis approx. 1/2 mile until it becomes Jimmy Mayfield Boulevard. From the point where South Jeff Davis becomes Jimmy Mayfield, Center Drive and the entrance to the Justice Center is approximately one-tenth of a mile on the right.

Staff at probate court was courteous and handled the application for renewal effeciently. The cost is $15 payable to the probate court and $32 cash (exact change only) paid to the Sheriffs office for finger printing.

The probate judge is not issuing any Temporary permits at this time (Aug. 2007) due to the Virginia Tech incident and some federal req't that the clerk couldn't cite.

Directions to the Sheriff's office for finger prints: Exit on Center drive and turn left (North) on Jimmy Mayfield. Take the first left onto Johnson Ave approx. 1/3 mile ahead. Sheriffs complex is on the left at 155 Johnson Avenue.

When taking my finger prints at the Sheriffs office, the officer asked for my SSN and employer name & address. I asked if the SSN was req'd and he said yes, but that it's only used locally for tagging the finger print records in their database, will not appear on my firearms license. They use a digital finger print machine.

--------------- Received 7/18/2008 -----------------

Go to the new courthouse. The probate court is on the first floor. I paid by a single check made payable to the probate court for a total of $47. Then off to the Sheriffs office for a digital fingerprint with no wait. License arrived one week latter. Thats right 7 days.

Only comment made was from the very nice lady at the probate court that alot of people are coming in from the north side of the county lately.

Total Time Taken: 1 WeekTotal Payment: 60.00

Process:

The new applicant process is just as you have described. The Fayette County Probate court is on the first floor of the Justice Center, on the left after you pass through security. Payment in the amount of $60 is given to the clerk, after which a receipt is given and you go to the Sheriff's office for electronic fingerprinting. To get to the Sheriff's office, turn left exiting the Justice Center, and take 1st available left. The Sheriff's office (jail) is the large white building on the left. Show them your receipt and you'll be fingerprinted. The whole process took only 45 minutes, and they say the processing/mailing of the permit takes 1 week.

Total Time Taken: One weekTotal Payment: $60.00

Process:

The process was exactly as noted above. I went to the Probate Court, filled out the required application, paid the $60.00 fee and was given a receipt. Immediately after that I went to the Sheriff's Dept. with the receipt to be electronically fingerprinted. This part of the process, filling out the application and being fingerprinted, took approximately 40 minutes. I received my GFL in the mail in exactly one week.

Total Time Taken: 3 weeksTotal Payment: 60.00

Process:

Process as described below. It took about 45 minutes start to finish, including the trip the sheriff's office for fingerprinting.

Comments:

My GFL apparently got lost in the mail, and Kelly at the Probate court couldn't have been nicer, or more helpful. I went to the court office again and she made me the new one on the spot. Excellent service.

New ApplicationSubmitted: May. 4, 2010
Total Time Taken: I applied on Wed, and got my GFL in the mail on FrTotal Payment: 47.00

Process:

I just used one check for the whole amount. It took about 45 minutes to fill out the papers, make sure they were all correct and get them filed. I paid 47 dollers i think.

Comments:

I can't believe it came so quickly. not even 48 hours. I thought i was gettting a rejection letter. And the detective that took my fingerprints was giving me advice on the best way to carry without drawing attention to myself. Very cool. Not to mention thet he even knew that i was visualy impaired, and he never questioned me about wether i should be getting my GFL or not.
