Member or Court Reported Process: Located in the old elbert county middle school on College Ave. If you pull straight into the parking lot on Forest Ave., the sheriff's office building is directly to the front and the judge's office is in the building to the left. Enter the building on the left and the Probate Judge is the first door on the left.
The judge will assist in filling out the paperwork and accept the $15 fee. Cash or an in-state check is accepted. The judge then gives the applicant a folder containing paperwork for the finger printing process. The folder is to be taken by the applicant to the county jail on Church Street (west). Exit the parking lot on the far side of where you entered. This exits onto Church Street. Turn left onto Church Street and continue for several yards. The elbert county jail in on the left.
The county jail will take care of the finger printing process and will forward the required $24 money order to the GBI. The post office is the closest and quickest provider of the money order. The post office currently charges $.95 for the $24 money order. Obtain the money order before going to the county jail.
Enter the front entrance to the county jail and inform the workers behind the glass of your intent to get get finger printed for a firearm permit. There you will be finger printed and need to fill out the information on the finger printed cards. The county jail will forward the paperwork in the folder and money order to the GBI.
Wait several weeks for the probate judge to mail you a copy of your firearm permit. Judge Susan R. Sexton was a pleasant and professional person. The staff at the county jail were helpful and courteous. Both places informed me that the wait was currently 3-4 months.
I went to the probate court for the application, then to the post office for the money order, and then to county jail for the finger printing. Although it took multiple attempts to get clear fingerprints, the entire process from start to finish was completed in about 45 minutes.
