Process:

Step I: probate court (get a marriage license or a gun permit - you decide!), quick and efficient application process ($30 cash) - answered a few questions, had picture taken, signed app. electronically, paid and on my way - maybe 10 minutes. Step II: electronic capture and transmission of fingerprints @ Newton County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) - which is actually located at 15151 Jersey Alcovy Road (if you ever want your GPS to find the address). When you get there it is on the Detention side. Go in, take a number and take your chances. My first pass, they called my number in less than 7 minutes, only to find out (see comment below*). Ran down the street to Quik Trip for another ($37.50) money order but upon my return the one female behind the glass took over 45 minutes to decide to call the first number - MINE (actually the one after mine, also see comments below). Then all she did was take the money and tell me to have a seat until "muffle...muffle...mumble". PS - another 23 minutes later I finally got my prints taken (the $5 cash is for electronic transmission of prints).

Comments:

Step I: the young lady actually did 2 applicants at one time, she was very friendly and efficient. Step II: *please make note -- NCSO does NOT accept Flash Foods' money orders, they say Flash does not honor them. Oddly, I was the only person trying to get fingerprinted at NCSO office, and yet during both of my attempts the woman behind the counter called the next number after mine - creating some angst for the person(s) waiting to visit loved one(s) in the jail holding the number(s) she was calling: it became necessary to be a little assertive. Since that whole Step II exercise, including the time to procure a second money order, took nearly 2 hours...from the first time I parked until the time I pulled out of the lot the second time...I actually missed my next appointment. Taking a day off from work to get 'business hours-only' stuff handled and having the rest of the day messed up due to, essentially, a lack of up-to-date information and a bit of a decidedly customer no-service attitude (I get it, they are accustomed to dealing largely with scofflaws and their relatives, not folks trying to abide by the letter of the law) can be quite frustrating. I'm posting this right after I applied for my renewal (first time in this county), instead of after I get my permit, in the hopes of helping some folks avoid some aggravation and frustration. They say it should take 4 to 6 weeks to get my renewal, but added that most people say they come in half that time (much less concerned about how long the GBI needs to do it's thing than it took to get the application process completed.)

Staff at both the Probate court and Sheriff's office were very friendly and helpful. I went early in the morning during mid-week and would recommend this as an optimal time. Here is the linke to the Newton County Sheriff: http://www.newtonsheriffga.org/Contact%20Us.html

Clerk brought me into the office where I sat at her desk answering questions as she filled out the electronic application form. She verified my info on my driver's license then took payment of $15 cash. The printed my GWC permit and informed me that I had to go to the Shetiff's Office with $5 cash and a $40 money order/certified check made payable to the Newton County Sheriff's Office. I then went to the Sheriff's office at 15251 Alcovy Rd. A clerk there ran two sets of fingerprints, one set electronic and one set ink the printed my right index finger on my permit and took it along with my payment. This was done on 6/24/11, received my permit on 7/13/11.

Comments:

Everyone was friendly and seemed to have knowledge of laws, requirements and procedures.

Comments:

Problems at the jail to get finger printed, Lady said she could not fingerprint today and come back on another day. I called the sheriff, and he said to go back to the jail and they will get more staff. Went back and had to wait a hour. It's been 2 weeks without a GFL and still checking the mail box everyday.
